Reflection (new)

Alex and I had tons of fun writing, acting, and filming out our video, Sh*t procrastinators say. Coming up with the idea was fairly easy, as we both had a lot of material to go on with the topic, and it was somewhat a prominent feature of our school lives. The hard part, however, came after the idea. Finding unique ideas to put in our video was hard, and relating the humour to our fellow classmates was even more difficult, as they all seem to be abnormally responsible and punctual. Luckily, our classmates were not the ones grading our product, instead was a teacher familiar with the topic.

Once we began filming our video, the satire we used seemed to work well with the idea behind the video. Using small snippets of humour within a generally serious idea generally created an air of "funny seriousness" (I'm not quite sure how to describe it) that fit the bill for a Sh*t people say video. Using this type of humour worked well for us because it didn't require funny (or good) acting on Alex or I's part. Overall, I think we created a pretty entertaining, satirical video. Creating a funny video was tough, but wasn't extremely difficult.

Final Humor Project reflection

English final humor project reflection
Oliver Atkins – Alex Wilkinson

For our final humor project, Alex and I made a “S*** People Say” video. These types of videos use satirical comedy to make fun of what people often say on a particular topic, personality type, or activity.  We created one about procrastinators, joking about what common excuses are used and how ridiculous they sound. The types of satirical comedy used was mostly mockery, but our video was a sort of parody of real life.

Cherub mad dogs

Oliver Atkins    Cherub: Mad dogs
At first glance, CHERUB: Mad dogs does not appear to be a humorous or happy book. After the opening pages however, it becomes apparent that Mad dogs is a funny and entertaining read. The 8th book in a series of 12, Mad dogs makes excellent use of Farce and Low comedy. Set in England and on occasion other countries, the CHERUB series follows a group of trained child spies sent on missions to infiltrate criminal organizations through their children and personal lives. Mad dogs is set Luton, London, and around England. After the collapse of the drug dealing KMG (Keith Moore’s Gang) Two major British gangs are fighting for turf. The Mad dogs, led by Sasha Thompson, and the Slasher Boys, headed up by Major Dee.
The most prominent type of humor used in Mad dogs and the CHERUB series is low comedy. James Adams, the lead character in the series, Makes many dirty gestures in the book, such as give people the finger, or the English equal of the insult, the “two fingered salute”. There is many instances of slapstick comedy throughout the book, such as Shaq, (a supporting character in the series) being shot in the testicles in a paintball match in the beginning of the book. Another example would be where Lauren, (also a supporting character in the series) sprays whipping cream down a young boy’s pants and then slips and injures herself on excess cream. The type of slapstick used in CHERUB may be childish, but is written well by Robert Muchamore and is entertaining.
As well as slapstick comedy, Farce is also used to good effect by the author. There is many incidences of coincidences in the book, such as when James is trying to prank one of his teachers at CHERUB by kissing and making out with his daughter and photographing it, when suddenly his father discovers them and uses the photos to embarrass James instead. Also, James and his friends appear to be the puppets of fate, many time falling into circumstances that they cannot control. This comedy may not appear to be as funny as others, but is a more sophisticated type of humor more geared towards teenagers and adults.

Satire #3

http://www.theonion.com/articles/nations-moms-invent-new-recreational-drug-to-worry,28130/

This article about fictional drugs makes effective use of sarcasm, a form of satirical humour that makes fun of something by pointing out the obvious flaws in arguments or logic while appearing serious.

This video, from "the onion", also uses a great sense of satirical humour with sarcasm. Using nascar as the centre of the sarcasm. in the video, the actors are very serious and this helps a lot with the sarcastic aspect of the video, as though the video is sarcastic, but the actors in the video themselves are not being sarcastic.

Comedy thing #1 First world problems

http://memegenerator.net/instance/20141205

This piece of satirical humour is funny because it uses satirical humour, sarcasm, in this case, to mock issues that some people complain about.

Satire

During WW2, America suffered a terrible loss when Pearl Harbor on Hawaii was bombed. Several hundred men were lost, and no natural resources or important military technology was destroyed. America was devastated. Not only had they lost a very small portion of their military and a few million dollars, they were humiliated and devastated.

America responded in the way only a technologically and militarily superior nation could. They retaliated quickly and justly against the Japanese. After losing so much on their tiny island of Hawaii, America nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They justifiably killed millions of people, because they can.
